Self Structured

This piece is structured from Sigmund Freud’s structural model of the mind, where the "ego" is the rational, decision-making part of personality. Presented as a scull showing its innards, a very tired head, and a tight rubber mask, this tryptic explores our understanding of our own personality and the feeling of control one has over a seemingly chaotic reality.

These pieces present more questions than answers, this project is a form of visual examination for myself and causes a self reflecting conversation I have been having for a while. Whilst I do not fully identify with Freud’s theories I borrow them here to explore different modes of understanding the self.

Each head has been meticulously hollow sculpted in hot glass, once the material has cooled and annealed it is had as stone. This material quality reflects the tension between the elasticity and definitive nature of personality.
